The American Shipbuilding Suppliers Association (ASSA) submitted a formal statement for the record during today’s U.S. Senate hearing titled “Sea Change: Reviving Commercial Shipbuilding.” The hearing, led by the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation’s Subcommittee on Coast Guard, Maritime, and Fisheries, focused on restoring America’s commercial shipbuilding capacity and strengthening the nation’s maritime industrial base.

In its statement, ASSA expressed strong support for the SHIPS for America Act, legislation designed to expand U.S. shipbuilding, enhance national security, and create stable, high-quality jobs for American workers. ASSA emphasized the importance of ensuring that the bill not only supports shipyards but also sustains the U.S. shipbuilding supplier base—the manufacturers that produce critical systems, components, and technologies for the Navy, Coast Guard, and commercial fleets.

The Association highlighted a 70% decline in U.S. shipbuilding suppliers over the past three decades, urging Congress to adopt “Buy America” provisions and long-term contracting models that strengthen the entire domestic supply chain.

ASSA’s President and CEO, Roger Camp, stated, “Rebuilding American shipbuilding means rebuilding the entire industrial base that supports it. We must protect and invest in the suppliers who make our maritime strength possible.”
